Matt Stelzman began his career in forensics, litigation support, and business valuation (FLV) while still attending college. As a runner with a local accounting firm, Matt helped out where needed, which typically meant in the litigation support and business valuation department.
Upon graduation from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga with a degree in finance in 2002, Matt joined a regional accounting firm providing valuation and litigation support services. In 2007, Matt identified an opportunity to help Henderson Hutcherson & McCullough capitalize on the demand for valuation and litigation support services. Matt left his job with the regionally based accounting firm, joined forces with Henderson Hutcherson & McCullough, and helped create what has proven to be a rapidly growing FLV practice.
With over a decade of experience under his belt, Matt finds that the majority of his time is spent working on cases that involve some form of litigation. These cases include valuations for marital dissolution purposes, lost earnings and lost profits calculations, wrongful termination or death cases, co-mingled funds, personal injury analysis, economic damages related to companies with revenues ranging from $1 million to over $100 billion dollars, and many more. As part of the litigation process, Matt has spent time in the courtroom as an expert witness, testifying on the results of his findings.
In addition to his time in the courtroom, Matt finds it important to help educate those around him. In an effort to educate the community, Matt frequently contributes to local publications as well as publishes articles on his blog (chattanoogabusinessvaluation.com). However, he feels that to provide a work product that exceeds expectations, he needs to help educate the attorneys he frequently works alongside. To do this, Matt gives presentations to local bar associations as well as hosts annual presentations focusing on valuation and litigation support.
The third group Matt helps to educate is his peers. As a member of the national editorial board for the Valuation & Litigation Briefing that is published by PDI Global, Matt offers his experience to help valuation professionals around the nation understand their own industry.
The final group that Matt attempts to help educate is the future valuation and litigation support professionals. For the past 4 years, Matt has been an adjunct instructor of finance and entrepreneurship at both Bryan College as well as the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
In addition to his degree in finance, Matt also earned an MBA from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He also maintains a Master Analyst in Financial Forensics (MAFF) certification as well as a Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA) certification and an Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA). Matt has been a member of the NACVA since 2007 and a member of ASA since 2013.
