2026 Alabama Contractors License Renewal Guide
As we approach 2026, we encourage all contractors to reach out to your CPA to determine if your contractor’s license needs to be renewed. We have provided a step-by-step guide on how to renew. Note, there are some slight differences between prime contractors’ renewals and subcontractors’ renewals. We will provide pdfs of the 2025 renewals for your reference and we will provide an update when the 2026 packets are made available sometime at the end of this year.
Step 1: Renewal Time (Both)
Find out when you need to renew. Alabama has a unique way of determining when you need to renew your license. See chart below for renewal months and fees:
Step 2: Submit Proof of Alabama Business Record (Both)
For Corporations, LPs, LLPs, and LLC’s you must provide a SCREEN SHOT/PRINT PAGE of your Alabama Secretary of States office business record. This is not applicable for individuals or general partnerships
Step 3: Submit Alabama Certification Cards (Both)
Please submit a copy of the certification card, not a printout of an online lookup, if applicable from the appropriate Alabama State Board. These can include HVAC and Refrigeration, Plumbers & Gasfitters (must be Master Plumbers), Electrical (must be electrical contractor or Master Electrician), etc.
Step 4: Submit Liability Insurance (Prime)
Contractors must submit proof of current liability insurance, with the certificate holder being listed as: Alabama License Board for General Contractors, 445 Dexter Ave, Suite 3060, Montgomery, AL 36104
Step 5: Submit Financial Statements (Prime)
Contractors must submit their current financial statements (current is no more than one year old at the time of submission). Audited, reviewed, or compiled financial statements in complete accordance with US GAAP and prepared by a CPA or board approved licensed public accountant are accepted by the board. NOTE: Non-GAAP/Internal financials will not be accepted. The working capital and net worth minimum requirement is $10,000. If a contractor does not meet the minimum requirement, a line of credit from a state or federal charter bank or savings association may be used to help get to the $10,000 limit.
Step 6: Complete Renewal Form (Both)
When completing this form make sure that all information is current, especially if contact information has changed, as this is the only way the board can reach you. The board also requires a citizenship verification, which is included inside the renewal packet. Acceptable identification can include driver’s license, birth certificate, US naturalization documents, etc. Please refer to the linked forms for complete list of acceptable identification. If you need assistance filling out the form, please consult your tax advisor. NOTE: for prime contractors this is where you will attach your CPA prepared financial statements.
Step 7: Pay Renewal Fee (Both)
After compiling all the appropriate documents and forms, you will send a money order or cashier’s check payable to the Alabama Licensing Board for General Contractors - $200 for prime and $100 for sub. This is the most important step as the board will not look at the packet and will return it if the appropriate funds are not submitted.
Step 8: Mailing Documents to Board
Compile all the appropriate documentation, completed forms, and money order/cashier’s check and send the packet to the Alabama Licensing Board for General Contractors located at 445 Dexter Ave, Suite 3060, Montgomery, AL 36104. These must be submitted 45 days before the license expiration, as they may be rejected and returned. This means companies that renew in March must mail their packet by mid-January to ensure it is delivered on time to meet the deadline. A late fee will be assessed 90 days after the license is expired, so it is important that the deadline is met. It is recommended that you send these packets by certified mail and ask for a signature at pick up so you can verify proof of delivery.
Though the 2026 forms are not out as of the date of this publication, you can see the 2025 forms here. HHM wants everyone’s renewals to go as smoothly as possible this coming year and we will keep you up to date when new information becomes available.
